Hey there! I’m Emily.

Welcome to my blog!

I’m a recent engineering graduate with a passion for the outdoors, adventures and exploring what the world has to offer. Whether its hiking, climbing, canoeing or anything in between – I can usually be found doing some form of exciting activity in the great outdoors.

I’ve already spent a year living abroad in Germany, and I’m now temporarily based in Canada – currently working for a summer camp, and then travelling afterwards. After that, who knows? One thing is for sure, it’s bound to be a little unconventional – so stick around to see where the journey takes me.

What is “Adventure Unconventional”?

It took me a long time to come up with the name for this blog. With so many other blogs out there, it was difficult to find a name that is (at least somewhat!) unique, and also captures the kind of traveller I am and the content I want to create. Ultimately, Adventure Unconventional was born – a blog that aims to show the adventurous side of travel in all its forms, and explore the possibilities of a more unconventional lifestyle.

But what exactly is “adventure” travel?

Typically it’s associated with outdoorsy pursuits like hiking, climbing, mountain biking and so on. Or perhaps travelling to remote, far-flung corners of the globe. And I definitely do see this as the best fit for me as a traveller – I love the mountains and am always keen to get off the beaten track!

But it’s not always easy to categorise oneself as a particular type of traveller – and I don’t necessarily think we should pigeonhole ourselves into boxes like that anyway.

So the way I see it, adventure travel can be whatever you want it to be. Whether I inspire you to take on a mountain hike, or whether I just inspire you to order something off the menu that you’ve never tried before – being adventurous means different things to different people.

As for the “unconventional” part – well, I’m a huge advocate of going against the grain and really following your passions in life. For me personally, I don’t want to chase career success or follow the typical path in life – I want to travel, experience new places, learn new skills and figure it out as I go along.

This won’t be the same for everyone, and not everyone has the luxury to just up sticks and leave for a new life on the other side of the world – so again, being a bit “unconventional” is completely what you make of it! For me, the “unconventional” lifestyle is really about being true to yourself and not worrying about what other people may think. Whether that involves long-term travel or simply trying out a niche hobby, I hope to show you that it’s more than okay to follow the path less travelled – in fact, I think it’s a great idea to do so.

At its core, Adventure Unconventional is a record of my travel stories and experiences. It’s the reason I started to write, and the reason I continue (even though I do post quite sporadically at present!) In the future I’m hoping to add tips, guidance and inspiration for others to access the kind of lifestyle I try to obtain – so be sure to stick around!
